How it works
- Add GST: GST = amount × rate. The total is the amount plus GST.
- Remove GST: taxable value = price × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). GST is the price minus the taxable value.
For example, a hotel room charged at ₹6,000 a night at 5% carries ₹300 of GST, and a ₹100 cinema ticket at 5% carries ₹5.
Rates
From 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall into a 5% merit rate, an 18% standard rate or a 40% rate for a short list of demerit goods. Some items are nil-rated or exempt, and some (such as certain tobacco products) kept their earlier rates for a period. Use “Other rate” for anything outside the presets.
Things to know
- The rate depends on the exact item or service and its classification. Check the GST Council notifications for your item.
- Some services, such as hotel rooms up to ₹7,500 a day, are taxed at 5% without input tax credit.
- CGST, SGST and IGST split Needs review: the calculator shows half as CGST and half as SGST for a supply within one state, and the full amount as IGST between states. Place-of-supply rules decide which applies, and we have not yet checked this against the IGST Act.
- This is a learning aid, not advice. Your invoice amounts may differ because of rounding rules.
