How to get a PAN
Get a Permanent Account Number: free instant e-PAN with Aadhaar, the new Forms 93 to 96 from April 2026, and why PAN must be linked to Aadhaar.
Tax Colony is an independent educational site, not a tax adviser or filing service. Verify with official sources or a professional before acting.
The free, quick route: instant e-PAN
If you are an individual who has never had a PAN, you can get an e-PAN free on the e-Filing portal using Aadhaar e-KYC. You need an Aadhaar with a linked mobile number. There is no form and no documents. The portal says it takes minutes once your Aadhaar OTP is checked.
It is not open to minors or to someone acting as a representative assessee.
Applying with a form
From 1 April 2026, PAN applications use Forms 93, 94, 95 and 96, which replace Forms 49A and 49AA. UTIITSL says it will not accept old-format forms after 31 March 2026.
Fees Needs review The official FAQ lists ₹107 for a physical card sent within India, ₹1,017 for one sent abroad and ₹72 for e-PAN only. We have not yet confirmed these figures against a second official page.
Link PAN with Aadhaar
Linking is mandatory for most PAN holders. Exceptions include residents of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya, non-residents, people aged 80 or over, and non-citizens.
If you don’t link, your PAN becomes inoperative. You get no refunds or interest on refunds, and TDS and TCS are deducted at higher rates. A fee of ₹1,000 applies to make it operative again.
Who must have a PAN Needs review
Broadly, anyone with taxable income, businesses above a turnover threshold, and people entering certain financial transactions. We could not open the official page with the exact list and thresholds, so check with the Income Tax Department before relying on this.
